Digital Climate – Chaos

Group members: Clara Doupovec

This is a project called ‘Chaos’. It was a group project in which we dealt with big data, particularly our chosen theme was data centers. The aim of the project was to make people aware that data is material, takes up space and consumes energy. We faced the challenge of creating a multi-sensory experience where people are free to climb, touch, move and listen.

This installation could be placed anywhere, except places where internet is banned, or if any of these specific companies are banned: SnapChat, Facebook, Whatsapp, Netflix, Google or Apple. Each construction represents one of the above companies, with all its data centers. The constructions differ in height, temperature, colour, shape and sound. They would be painted with neon colours and the room would be lit up by black light to create a certain atmosphere and to suit the project budget. There would be a fan on to give the feeling and experience of inside a data center. Each construction has four small holes, from where the sound is emitted. The sound is on a loop and not very loud, encouraging people to get closer to and interact with each one. The constructions explain what they are and what kind of energy they run on. Clara (second group member) made the digital model of the room and the model on the walls. We went through the design process together to get to the final outcome. I made the physical model of the room, the poster for inside and the promotional poster. However we have collaborated and helped each other in all the processes, so the work was collaborative and we learned each other’s skills.
